Abstract It is suggested that the extended X-ray sources in clusters of galaxies may be explained by a population of compact sources, like those known in our own Galaxy. To test this hypothesis a simple model for the X-ray luminosity to mass ratio is proposed, and a correlation of the X-ray luminosity with the virial mass is sought. The results are inconclusive. Other possible tests are discussed.
