Abstract

The third continua emitted after excitation of rare gases (Rg) by charged particles are identified to be due to the decay of the ionic excimer Rg 2+ 2 to Rg ++Rg +. The involved states are isoelectronic to the ionically bound 3∏ g and the weakly bound 3 ∏ u states in the halogenes.
