Abstract

A magnetic study performed on compounds UNi 2± x with different stoichiometries is reported. As a result of measurements a slight increase of both T C and the magnetization with increasing uranium concentration was obtained. This fact reveals a negligible role of possible Ni antistructure atoms in the magnetic ordering of UNi 2. Discussing these results within the simple band model for U3d Laves phases, UNi 2 is suggested to be a weak itinerant 5f ferromagnet.
