Abstract
Low-K rhyolites and overlying 2-pyroxene andesites, both of Late Eocene age, comprise the oldest volcanic units exposed on Saipan. The mineralogy and geologic setting of these rocks indicate they were erupted in a volcanic arc setting. The presence of andesite and lack of basalts of similar age suggest that the rhyolites are not part of a typical bimodal (basalt/rhyolite) suite.
