Abstract
Abstract The concept of information as a causal agent in complex systems is advanced informally along with a discussion of how the meaning of information is related to the causal structure of systems. It is proposed that information and system structure are mutually translatable. Causal processes may thereby originate non-trivial information which in turn is capable of partially determining next states and/or structures of the system. Development of a theory of how systems retain information, system memory, occupies a significant portion of the discussion. The continuity of system memory (history) is tied to the growth of intelligence by an argument which appeals to a high number of generations, experiences, or model cycles involving very many elements.
