Abstract
The article examines the economic and social roots of the violent conflict at Sivakasi and other places in Tamilnadu in 1899 between the Nadars and Maravas. It analyses how a ‘warrior’ caste, Marava, losing its position in the old order, took to violence against ritual claims of a rising community (Nadar).
