Abstract

In Nigeria, like most other developing nations of the world, the agricultural extension service is the most important public service institution with the widest range of responsibilities for agricultural and rural development. For this reason, the performance of this agency has been a matter of great concern to different categories of people but particularly to those who are directly involved with the immediate problems of transforming the traditional agriculture in this country. Whereas the agency has had a major impact on cash crop production, it has been less effective in its other roles. A purposeful, integrated approach is needed on the lines suggested in this paper.
