Abstract

"The Order of Santo Stefano in the Levant: An Unpublished Account of a Voyage in 1627." Late sixteenth-and early seventeenth-century naval expeditions of the Order of Santo Stefano against the Turks in the eastern Mediterranean are generally well known. However, one voyage-that undertaken by the fleet of six galleys under the command of Admiral Giulio Barbolani de' Conti di Montauto in the period April-June l627-has until now lacked reliable documentation. An unpublished manuscript in the University of Wisconsin Memorial Library chronicles this voyage which began in Italy (Livorno) on April 12 and progressed through the Ionian Sea to the Peleponnese, across the Aegean to the Dardanelles, and back to Italy (Taranto) on June 30. An introduction treats the historical context of this particular voyage and comments on linguistic peculiarities in the Italian text. A critical edition of the manuscript account is accompanied by an English translation and notes.
