Abstract
The Bicentennial celebration in the United States set in motion plans for parades, re-enactments, reprints of nineteenth-century local histories, as well as projects involving original research. While many of these activitieswere short-lived, others have continued to exist and sometimes thrive. The Oral Traditions Project is one of the survivors.Located in central Pennsylvania (Union County), the project was started in 1973, in anticipation of the 1976 celebration. In 1977, along with several other projects of the Union County Bicentennial Commission, Oral Traditions became incorporated into the activities of the county's historical society. The older, more established group benefited from the diversity and freshness of what had been thought to be a highlyenergetic but short-term endeavour, while the newer project was given the opportunity to continue its research indefinitely.
