Abstract

The Optoelectronic Nose

Highlights

  • We have developed an entirely new class of lightweight chemical identification systems based on disposable colorimetric sensor arrays: essentially, a digital, multidimensional extension of litmus paper [1–4]

  • The design of the colorimetric sensor array is based on two fundamental requirements: (1) the use of chemically diverse indicators that respond to changes in their chemical environment, and (2) the coupling of this interaction to an intense chromophore to provide a visible readout [3]

  • For the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we have demonstrated high sensitivity for the detection of a wide range of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) [5–9]

Summary

Introduction

Suslick *, Zheng Li, Jon Askim and Maria LaGasse We have developed an entirely new class of lightweight chemical identification systems based on disposable colorimetric sensor arrays: essentially, a digital, multidimensional extension of litmus paper [1–4]. The design of the colorimetric sensor array is based on two fundamental requirements: (1) the use of chemically diverse indicators that respond to changes in their chemical environment (i.e., interact with analytes of interest), and (2) the coupling of this interaction to an intense chromophore to provide a visible readout [3].
