Abstract

A method is found for optimising the duration of the ratemeter weighting function when a variable pulse rate of randomly timed pulses is to be measured. This method is applied to rectangular and exponential weighting functions, as important examples. The method is extended to cover the case where the contribution of each input pulse to the reading is to be proportional to its amplitude, insted of uniform, the distribution of pulse amplitudes being specified. A brief account of methods for obtaining an approximately rectangular weighting function, in principle, is given in the appendix.
