Abstract

This paper presents the results of optimization of composition of the concretes modified with mechanically activated fluidized bed combustion (FBC) fly ash. The analysis was performed according to the results of investigations based on the central composite design of experiment. The amount of FBC fly ash used as an equivalent of cement varied from 2.1% to 14.9% of the mass of binder. Water/binder ratios in the mixes were in the range of 0.35 to 0.54. The optimization criteria were: maximal compressive strength after 28, 90 and 180 days of concrete curing, maximal fracture toughness (maximal value of critical stress intensity factor KIcS), maximal value of elastic modulus after 28 and 180 days of curing and minimal porosity of hardened concrete. It is shown that FBC fly ash has small influence on the optimization results whereas water/binder ratio influences the results significantly. The optimal solutions were obtained for w/b ratios below 0.37.
