Abstract

The effect of an axial temperature gradient on the optical performance of a plane parallel window is discussed. It is shown theoretically that an incident plane wave front is not deformed significantly on traversing the window. However, appreciable angular deviation can occur, leading to distortion in the image of an extended object. Experiments which support these results are described and a method is indicated for reducing the effect of air turbulence arising at the window surfaces.
