Abstract

The complex refractive indices have been measured for the three axes of single crystals of gallium over the range 0.4 to 8.0 micrometres using a reflection method with polarized light. In the lower energy regions if the absorption is ascribed to conduction electrons the numbers taking part according to the orientation of the electric vector relative to the axes are Na Nb Nc 1.22 1.94 0.31 ? 1022 cm-3 At higher energies there is an absorption band at about 2 1 eV (5700 ?) for all three axes, a and c being much alike but the peak is much weaker for the b axis. The transitions responsible for this absorption have not yet been conclusively identified.
