Abstract

It has been reported that the United States may withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty. The treaty gives 34 state parties the means to monitor any potential military build-up through reciprocal unarmed surveillance overflights covering the entirety of each other's territories, thereby reducing the risk of miscalculation. It remains unclear, however, if the US will indeed withdraw from the treaty and, if so, when it might do so.
