Abstract

The quantitative interferon production by human leukocytes from 39 donors ranging in age from 16 weeks of fetal life to adulthood has been studied. Consistent differences in the quantitative production of interferon with advancing age were not found. The data suggest that impairment of interferon production is not an adequate explanation for the apparent increased susceptibility of the immature host to some viral infections. However, the findings do not exclude the possibility that diminished interferon production may be an important factor in the pathogenesis of fetal viral infections occurring in the first trimester of gestation.
