Abstract

The onset of helical arrangement of chitin microfibrils in the wall was investigated during fruit body development of Coprinus cinereus . The onset was traced back to hyphal knots of 0·1–0·2 mm in diameter, i.e. fruit-body initials in which no differentiation into hyphal tissues was yet discernible. The walls of the hyphal knots were distinguishable from those of hyphae in other developmental phases in that the former contained lower amounts of chitin. The results obtained support our model for the ontogeny of the helical wall structure.
