Abstract A study has been made of the nonlinear magnetostatic equilibria available to an axisymmetric corona as excess mass is added to a region confined in latitudinal extent at the coronal base. It is found that sequences of equilibrium solutions evolve discontinuously in response to increasing gas pressure, in contrast to the continuous evolution that occurs with linear models. This discontinuity may represent the onset of rapid dynamical processes such as coronal transients and mass ejections. The excess mass required to reach the discontinuity is of the same order as that observed in coronal mass ejection events (CMEs). The work suggests that CMEs may be the result of quasi-static evolution of the corona to the point where magnetostatic equilibria are no longer available.
