Abstract

In the recently published article, Wang and coworkers have tried to evaluate the prevalance of circulating C. pneumoniae DNA and its relationship with the severity and extent of coronary artery disease (CAD) [ [1] Wang S.S. Tondella M.L. Bajpai A. et al. Circulating Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA and advanced coronary artery disease. Int J Cardiol. In the current study, the presence of circulating C. pneumoniae DNA was determined by real-time PCR assay. They found that the prevalance of circulating C. pneumoniae DNA was significantly associated with multi-vessel disease. The odds ratio was 5.1 after adjustment for conventional risk factors. Finally, they drew the conclusion that presence of circulating C. pneumoniae DNA was associated with advanced CAD, suggesting C. pneumoniae infection as a contributing factor to the progression of coronary atherosclerosis.
