Abstract

ABSTRACT Twenty-three fossil species within 14 genera have already been assigned to Pompilidae, five of these genera are extinct. The oldest described fossil species of spider wasp denotes a late Eocene origin of the group, although the family has been already reported from the early Eocene. Herein, we describe a new species of spider wasp from the Fur Formation, Denmark, the first species described from the Ypresian age. Cryptocheilus leleji sp. nov. is now the oldest recognised species of spider wasp to date.
