Abstract

As the current chair of the Steering Committee for CANS, I am thrilled to introduce Nursing Outlook as our official journal. CANS is an open membership entity of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), with the goals to: (1) be a strong voice of nurse scientists at the national and international levels; (2) support the development, conduct, and utilization of nursing science; and (3) facilitate lifelong learning opportunities for nurse scientists. Strategic direction for the Council is provided by a Steering Committee made of representatives from the 4 regional nursing research societies, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) (ex-officio). In light of the American Nurses Association’s decision to disband the Council of Nurse Researchers, AAN board members in the late 1990s recognized the need to create a national nursing research organization. Thus, CANS was established in 2000 to foster better health through nursing science. Conceived as a partnership with existing research groups or groups providing substantive researcher support, a consortium-type steering committee was convened to guide the Council. The founding steering committee from 2000-2002, chaired by Dr. Bill Holzemer (University of CaliforniaeSan Francisco), included representation from the 4 regional nursing research societies (Eastern, Midwest, and Southern Nursing Research Societies, and Western Institute of Nursing); the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses; ANF; STTI; and the NINR (ex-officio). The Council agenda and operating logistics have evolved steadily through steering committee deliberations under the guidance of leading nurse scientists, including Lauren Aaronson, Marilyn Sommers, Margaret Heitkemper, and myself as AAN board-appointed
