Abstract

Conclusion and Summary A study has been made of a paracolon bacterium, E 72/48, which presented serologic relationships, in some instances very marked, to various Salmonellae, and to members of the Shigella Flexner group. Absorption tests showed that this organism contains antigens related to or identical with factor I of the Salmonellae. This antigen of E 72/48 appears to be related to the one which is responsible for the serologic relationship between certain Salmonella strains and the Shigella Flexner group. It would also seem probable from these investigations that S. thompson, S. newport and probably S. hirschfeldi, which have no factor I recorded in their antigen formula, may be in possession of some antigen related to factor I.
