Abstract
1. 1. In the marine bivalves Mytilus edulis, Modiolus modiolus, Chlamys opercularis and Tellina tenuis, the enzyme lysozyme was primarily associated with the crystalline style and digestive gland. 2. 2. In contrast, in Mya arenaria lysozyme was associated with the gills and digestive gland. 3. 3. It is suggested that the primary role of lysozyme-like enzymes in marine bivalves is in utilization of bacteria.
