Abstract

Breeding populations of Razorbills Alca torda in Europe can be divided into one group of smaller birds, usually referred to in the literature as A. t. islandica (France, Great Britain, Ireland, Faroe and Iceland), and one of larger birds, usually referred to as A. t. torda (Scandinavia and Russia). A proportion of the larger group can be distinguished on winglength, but only when bill‐groove categories have been established. The large form (defined in the text for different age categories) occurs in Britain and Ireland mostly in the late winter, and chiefly on coasts of eastern Scotland and England, with at least 73 records in Great Britain and 11 in Ireland.
