Abstract

Summary Grimes, L. G. 1976. The occurrence of cooperative breeding behaviour in African birds. Osrich 47: 1–15 The paper summarises present knowledge of the occurrence of cooperative breeding behaviour in African birds (52 species representing 30 families or subfamilies), and lists the species in which it may also occur. An analysis of the ecology of these species suggests that the behaviour occurs more frequently in those inhabiting dry and moist woodlands. However, the data is weighted in favour of non-fcrest birds and the socio-ecology of the behaviour is, therefore, not clear.
