Abstract

Abstract Extract In contrast to the tropical poultry mite, Ornithonyssus bursa, which is common in tropical and sub-tropical countries on either side of the equator, and the red mite Dermanyssus gallmac, which is cosmopolitan, the poultry mite, O. (Liponyssns) sylviarum, known as the northern poultry mite, has not previously been recorded from south of the equator. It has now been identified on poultry on two properties in the vicinity of Christchurch, New Zealand.
