Abstract

The study determined the levels of knowledge, awareness, and compliance of engineers and workers with respect to the required occupational safety and health (OSH) program of construction companies contracted by educational institutions in Davao City. Employing a descriptive correlation approach, this investigation ascertained the relationship between the levels of safety awareness and compliance of the respondents for such program as advocated by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Through a researcher- made questionnaire (α = 0.957) and basic descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential (Pearson r) statistics, findings reveal that the high level of knowledge is attributed to the observance of government training and regulations on safety through the DOLE in cooperation with DPWH, on the construction sites. Furthermore, there is a high level of awareness among engineers and workers regarding the implementation of safety and health program of the contractors hired by the educational institutions. A very high compliance level for engineer respondents implies that there is a strong commitment to obey what is mandated by DOLE Order 13 regarding safety and health program even if the worker respondents are only perceived to abide by the rules and regulations set by the company vis-á-vis safety and health program. Results also uphold that the level of safety awareness is a factor that is strongly associated with the level of safety compliance.
