Abstract

Abstract Surface detail in the 4 Å-8 Å range has been observed by direct transmission electron microscopy on crystallites of magnesium oxide prepared by calcination of the basic carbonate. This detail is attributed to step growth. Steps are observed both in profile and in transmission through the faces and appear to be suitable for assessing point resolution. Evidence is presented which suggests the need for re-assessment of the fundamental structural unit on a crystal surface.
