Abstract

This article focuses upon minority groups' inter-relationships and experiences in conjunction with Presidential electoral politics. Looking at the campaigns of Barack Obama (2008, 2012), what is the impact of an African-American candidate on minority electoral coalitions? Areas such as respective group's interests, absolute and relative group size and geographic location, extent of the group's political development and status; and organizational infrastructures and leadership are discussed and assessed in terms of their Presidential electoral effects and impact on future elections. The Obama effect on minority coalitions integrates the campaign strategies, appeals and messages, along with the role of minority groups' themselves. The latter area deals with mobilization efforts and candidate support. A key distinction is made between electoral coalitions and alliances.
