Abstract

By using the technique of the effective action for composite operators, we present a calculation of the effective potential of the O( N) scalar model for arbitrary values of N. The potential is given as a truncation of a loop expansion, and reproduces the known results of the N → ∞ limit. The potential shows a symmetry breaking for “small” values of the “classical fields”, whereas it shows Landau-type singularities in the region of “large” values. However, these singularities are clearly an artifact of our approximation and the model is perfetly consistent in the low energy regime.
