Abstract

Poultry offal and feathers are usually processed separately in the rendering industry to produce poultry by-product meal (PBPM), hydrolyzed poultry feathers (HPF), and poultry fat. The nutritional value of these materials for poultry and swine has been well established (Wilder et al., 1955; Lillie et al., 1955; Fuller, 1956; Naber et al., 1961). Since they are in a large part incorporated into poultry diets, it was logical to question the economy of producing separate products in the first place. Methods have been devised whereby poultry offal and feathers can be processed together in natural proportions, yielding a product having the proximate composition represented by a mixture of PBPM 45%, HPF 40%, and poultry fat 15%.
