The unique torque speed characteristic of the single-shaft gas turbine requires that it have a continuously variable-ratio transmission for successful application to automotive use. This paper discusses the development of a novel mechanical transmission which has the power density required for highway vehicles. Cost and efficiency are competitive with conventional automatic transmissions.
