Abstract

A model of the interaction between a compressible fluid and multiple deformable bodies is discussed. It consists of a fluid dynamics model! a solid mechanics model, and a module that updates the fluid mesh. These modules are loosely coupled within the overall numerical model. The mesh of the fluid domain is structured near the surface of the deformable bodies in order to capture the boundary layer in the fluid more accurat, ely. .4n unstructured mesh region is used elsewhere in t.hc Huid domain. Using an unstructured mesh means that an automatic mesh generator can be used so that complicated geometries can be meshc~d rclatively easily. Also, the mesh deformation that, is caused by the moving mesh is primarily absorbed by the unstructured region. The governing equations and numerical model arc discussed, followed by a discussion of the meshing methods. An example involving the deformation of multiple plates in an interior flow is presented.
