Abstract

The number of vibrational (j=0) and rovibrational (j not=0) states of the Morse-type, four-parameter potential recently introduced by Wei (1990) are obtained in analytical form. Because of its four parameters, this potential can be easily fitted to other potential forms by matching not only the second derivatives at the minimum, but also the total number of rovibrational states. The Lennard-Jones LJ(12, 6) potential is used as a test case of this fitting procedure. The eigenvalues of such a fitted Wei potential, which are expressed analytically, are in good agreement with the LJ(12, 6) eigenvalues, especially for low and high vibrational quantum numbers.
