Abstract
AbstractA micromagnetic calculation is given of the critical thickness of the nucleation of stripe domains in thin ferromagnetic films with so‐called perpendicular anisotropy. The micromagnetic equations were solved in linear approximation by means of a complete system of functions. The paper presents the critical thickness Dcr and the corresponding wavelength λcr as a function of the ferromagnetic constants. The agreement between our calculations and the measurements of Saito et al. on permalloy is good. For Fe‐films good agreement with the measurements of Bourret and Dautreppe is obtained only for Dcr but not for λcr. The calculated value for λcr is about a factor 1.5 greater than the experimental value.
