Abstract

The development of nuclear magnetic resonance to be studied in the subsequent chapters started with the first successful performance, at the end of 1945, of the so called nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) experiment. Before we can embark on that study, some stage-preparing work must be done, and this is what the present chapter is concerned with. Section 1 briefly discusses the development in experimental nuclear physics that eventually led to the nmr experiment.
