Abstract

The paper covers the reason for the development, manufacture and operation of a model railway for the School of Signalling for the Lancashire and Yorkshire (L&Y) Railway in 1912. The gauge 1 electrified model railway was manufactured by apprentices at Horwich Railway works with some of the equipment attributed to the famous railway equipment suppliers Bassett-Lowke. The School of Signalling was based at Manchester Victoria Station from 1912 to 1995 and was then given to the National Railway Museum (NRM) at York. The restoration and operation of the model railway has been achieved by a team of NRM volunteers with the support of the NRM Curatorial team. The volunteers now maintain and demonstrate the Railway to NRM visitors on a regular basis. (6 pages)
