Abstract

Study ObjectiveTo examine peer-reviewed literature reporting the rate of amenorrhea, patient satisfaction, and re-intervention following the NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation procedure.DesignA search of the English language literature published from 2000 to 2011 was conducted using PUBMED. Keywords: NovaSure, bipolar radiofrequency ablation, pre-menopausal. Studies were excluded that did not report outcomes or did not follow patients for at least 1 year.InterventionThe NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure.Measurements and Main ResultsTabled 1Reported Amenorrhea Rates with NovaSureFollow-up (months)Amenorrhea Rate (%)Reference(s)1230-58Asgari, 2011; Bongers, 2005; Gallinat, 2002; Busund, 2003; Pennix, 20103665Gallinat, 20044843-58Elmardi, 2009; Baskett, 20056048-75Kleijn, 2008; Penninx, 2011; Gallinat, 20078497.1Fulop, 2007 Open table in a new tab Tabled 1Comparative Data at 1 YearNovaSure/ThermaChoice (Bongers, 2004)NovaSure/Hydrothermablator (Penninx, 2010)NovaSure/Thermachoice (Clark, 2011)Amenorrhea rate (%)43/846.7/30.456/23Satisfaction (%)90/7987/68-Re-ablation-1/90/2Hysterectomy4/45/81/1 Open table in a new tab ConclusionThe NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure is associated with high rates of amenorrhea, high patient satisfaction, and low re-intervention rates.
