Abstract
This article will discuss the notions of muḥkam and mutashābih in the commentary of Elmah'li Muhammad Hamdi Yazir. Yazir was a Turkish scholar whose life spanned the Ottoman and the republican eras. He received a traditional education in Istanbul. Besides Turkish he knew Arabic, Persian and French and translated several philosophical works from French into Turkish. He was an MP, a lecturer and a principal. In 1926 he was asked by certain statesmen to write a Qur'anic commentary in Turkish, an outstanding work that he completed around 1938, but that, due to the language barrier, has hitherto passed unnoticed outside of Turkey. In this paper, I would like to focus on Yazir's commentary on Q. 3:7. First of all, I will discuss his definitions of the two terms muḥkam and mutashābih, then the methodology he utilised to interpret this verse. I will also consider those who influenced him and finally assess the originality of his contribution to the understanding of this verse.
