Abstract

The method for the estimation of sediment layer thickness in pipes is described. The method is based on the interference of Lamb waves in the wall of the pipe and calculation of their absorption in the sediment layer. Measurement algorithms enabling to determine the absorption and the sediment thickness even of a pipe with a very distorted amplitude-frequency characteristic are described. Algorithms including the calculation of autocorrelation function and FFT are shown. The resolution of the method was investigated. Controlled interference was analysed. The interference was damped for the waves propagating in one direction and was avoided in the other direction. Transient response was investigated near the exiting section of the pipe. PC- simulation and experimental verification were done.
