Abstract

K r ANZE KOJIRO NOBUMITSU 1t'J {SY (1435-1516) was an important noh artist of the late Muromachi period.' Several of his plays, such as Momijigari AIMR, (Autumn Excursion), Funabenkei fY.[ (Benkei on Board), and Kocho Fi~ (The Butterfly), have enjoyed popularity down to this day. Little is known, however, about his life. The most important document concerning him is Nobumitsu gazosan {^Y/T@ (Nobumitsu Portrait Inscription), written by the Gozan Zen prelate Keijo Shuirin 81J0I0 (1440-1518). The inscription combines an account of Nobumitsu's life and accomplishments with a pseudo-history of the Kanze troupe and sarugaku 3 noh based on earlier sources such as Zeami's tH41/F Fuishikaden RlOtf/n. It thus sheds light on the sociocultural history of late Muromachi noh as well as on Nobumitsu the noh artist. The piece is also important for its influence on later writings on noh, including Yoza yakusha mokuroku EW Uiti (Record of Noh Artists of the Four Troupes), Rinchui kenmonshui W2ARJX (A Record of Things Seen and Heard by Rinchiu), Iroha sakusha chuimon 1v, e ;%{'Siut (Comprehensive List of Playwrights), and Kanze tayu kakiage ftHK ? (A Record of Kanze Troupe Leaders).2 Nobumitsu was the seventh child of Kanze Motoshige Wth7t5 (1398-1467), better known as On' ami 4. The son of a younger brother of Zeami Motokiyo
