Abstract
Abstract A Swedish professor, who is deeply interested in Nobel affairs but annoyed by the criticism about some omissions among the Nobel laureates, exclaimed recently: ‘The Academy could get rid of all criticism by forgetting about the prizes. But then little Sweden in a dark corner of Northern Europe would lose the unique contact with the world events in science.’1For us outsiders it is hard to imagine how emotional the cold Swedes may become about the Nobel Prize. It is a national affair in Sweden. Come October even the cab drivers seem to participate in the guessing game. Of course, the Nobel Prize is the only science award, worldwide, that is appreciated by the general public, not just the scientists.
