Abstract

The compounds, CH 2BrCHClBr, CH 2ICHCl 2, CH 2ClCHClI, CH 2BrCHFBr, and CH 2ICHFCl, were synthesized by directed addition of bromine or iodine monochloride to vinyl chloride or vinyl fluoride, and their high resolution proton and fluorine NMR spectra were obtained. The spectra of the three spin systems were analyzed by the approach of an ABC calculation and the ABC parts of the four spin ABCX spectra were analyzed by two ABC calculations. Chemical shifts and coupling constants consistent with the observed spectra were assigned and compound structures are proposed. The appearance of two different sets of splittings due to the proton of the CHFY group is explained in terms of differences in effective chemical shifts and not due to different sets of coupling constants.
