Abstract

In 2000, the federal government of Nigeria began a program of liberalization, deregulation, and privatization of the telecommunications sector, with far reaching consequences. This paper examines the liberalized Nigerian telecommunications industry through the lens of Christensen's ldquoSeeing What's Nextrdquo process, with particular emphasis on the data services sector. We consider the forces of innovation at play, the competitive battles between incumbents and new entrants, and the strategic choices available to the various stakeholders. Using a theory as guide, we explore the implications for the future of this industry.
