Abstract
This eagerly awaited guideline was issued by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in May (NICE, 2001). All members of the Royal College of Midwives were circulated with the document in June, thus achieving a high level of access for one of the professions most interested in and affected by it. It is interesting then that midwifery response to this document appears fairly quiet, when midwives can surely welcome its publication.
