Abstract

Workforce Education and Development Services (WEDS) supports NHS Wales and the Welsh Government to ensure Wales has a skilled workforce that meets the demands of modern healthcare. It has developed an important workforce resource to support and ensure that HCSWs in Wales are highly skilled and fully competent to deliver care to patients/service users. Welsh Government minister for health and social services, Mark Drakeford AM, launched the academically accredited Skills and Career Framework for Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) in November 2015. The framework supports HCSWs, from initial induction, through their career progression, to retirement. It will be introduced across NHS Wales from April 2016 for all new HCSWs, and will be mandated for all existing HCSWs from 2018. Corporate and clinical induction will now have to be successfully completed before any newly recruited HCSW can start working in a clinical area.
