Abstract

The next green revolution of organic rice Rice is a major food crop for more than half of the world's population, and is a crucial export commodity for Thailand, explains Professor Apichart Vanavichit of the Rice Science Center. Following the successful Green Revolution in 2005 in Thailand, new rice varieties developed have negatively impacted the environment and well-being of rice farmers in irrigated areas. However, based on chemical-free cultivation practices, organically grown rice conserves the environment and genetic diversity and enhances the nutritional properties of harvested rice. Professor Vanavichit demonstrates the future of climate-ready, nutrient-rich rice – as rice is becoming more resistant to diseases, insect pests and environmental stressors, which make organic rice vulnerable and risky for crop loss. Looking to increase productivity and enhance resistance in organic cultivation sustain organically-grown rice and benefit consumers by reducing the market price, the Rice Science Center explores organic rice yields.
