Abstract

Practice transformation is underway, enabled by health information technology (HIT). Although HIT promises many benefits related to quality, cost, and staff satisfaction, its implementation is fraught with uncertainty and perils. Few nurse leaders were exposed to HIT in their basic or advanced educational preparation. Successful implementation and adoption of these new technologies demands the skills and expertise of a new kind of leader. A new role has emerged in the C-suite with the chief nursing informatics officer (CNIO). In this article, we share the role of the CNIO, examine differences in the roles of the chief nursing officer (CNO) and CNIO, the benefits of this position, and career paths into the CNIO role.
