Abstract

Abstract Bulbinella Kunth, including Chrysobactron Hook, f., is a genus recorded only from South Africa and New Zealand. Generic and specific criteria and flower dimorphism are discussed and the number of taxa recognised in New Zealand is raised from four to seven, no two of them sympatric. The names adopted, with approximate known distribution, are: B. rossii (Hook. f.) Cheesem., Auckland and Campbell Islands; B. hookeri (Hook.) Cheesem., mountains of North Island (Mt Egmont, Maungapohatu, parts of Volcanic Plateau) and northern South Island; B. gibbsii Ckn. var. gibbsii, Stewart Island; B. gibbsii var. balanifera L. B. Moore var nov., mountains of southern and middle South Island, Tararua Range, southern Ruahine Range; B. angustifolia (Ckn. et Laing) L. B. Moore comb. nov., hills of Canterbury, Otago, and Southland; B. talbotii L. B. Moore sp. nov., Gouland Downs, N.W. Nelson; B. modesta L. B. Moore sp. nov., lowlands of Buller and Westland. A key is provided for identification of plants.
