Abstract

ABSTRACT A down hole adjustable and multiangle bent sub is now available to remotely control the well bore path during directional drilling operations, with he same bottom-hole assembly (BHA) configuration. This new patented tool is called Telepilote. SMF International (SMFI) and the Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP) have developed two different modes of actuation, either by dropping steel balls into the string bore (Mechanical Telepilote) or by sending an electrical signal (Electrical Telepilote). The paper describes the main dimensional and operational data and procedures and indicates the potential range of application in directional drilling due to the very specific characteristics of this new remote-controlled tool.
